Introduction
Ginger
(Botanical name: Ziniber officinale / Zingiber officinale), is an underground
metamorphic stem. It grows horizontally inside the soil. A lot of food is
stored in it, due to which it swells and becomes thick. Ginger is a plant of
the genus Zingiberis. Mostly found in tropical and subtropical parts. Ginger is
a native of South Asia, but now it is also grown in East Africa and the
Caribbean. The ginger plant is also found in China, Japan, Mascaraine and the
islands of the Pacific Ocean. Simpodial rhizome is found in its plant.
History
Dried ginger is called Saunth (Shushti). In India,
it is more common in Bengal, Bihar, Chennai, Madhya Pradesh, Cochin, Punjab and
Uttar Pradesh. There is no seed of ginger; small pieces of its tuber are buried
in the ground. It is the root of a plant. It is prominent as a spice in India.
Ginger is an important spice crop. Sowing is done in the first half of the
month of May. Warm environment is good for the crop.
Ginger is mostly used during cooking. Often in
winter, people get cough and cold, in which use of ginger is considered very
effective. It is also beneficial in Aruchi and heart diseases. Apart from this,
ginger is also considered beneficial for many more diseases.
