Introduction

Neem is a foliage tree of Indian origin. It has been found in the neighboring countries - Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka etc. for centuries. But in the last nearly one and a half years, this tree has crossed the geographical boundaries of the Indian subcontinent and reached Africa, Australia, Southeast Asia, South and Central America and many tropical and sub-tropical countries of the Southern Pacific Islands. Its botanical name is Azadirachta indica. The botanical name of Neem is derived from its Sanskrit language Nimba.

 

History

Neem is a fast-growing deciduous tree, which can reach a height of 15–20 m (about 50–65 ft.) and can sometimes grow up to 35–40 m (115–131 ft.). Neem leaves most or almost all its leaves in severe drought. Its branches are widespread. The stem is relatively straight and short and can reach 1.2 m in diameter. Its bark is hard, discolored or cracked and can also be white-gray or red-brown in color. The juice is brownish-white and the inner wood is red, which turns reddish-brown on exposure to air. The root system consists of a strong main taproot rot and well developed lateral roots.

 

Transverse leaflets long, 20–40 cm (8 to 16 in) long, with dark green leaflets ranging from 20 to 31 with lengths of 3–8 cm (1 to 3 in). The terminal sheet is usually in situ. The petiole is small. The complexes (new leaves) are slightly purple or red in color. The size of mature sheets is usually asymmetric and their edges are denticulate.
