Ashwagandha Root Powder
Introduction
Ashwagandha is a dicotyledonous plant. This is the plant of Solanaceae
family. About 3000 species of Solanaceae family are found all over the world.
And 90 lineages are found. Out of this only 2 species are found in India.
Plants of this caste are 1.25 m tall, straight, very branched, evergreen
and shrubby. Leaves are ovate, oval. The flowers are green, yellow and small
and grouped in five. Its fruit is berry which contains milk similar to peas.
This is red in color when cooked. Roots are 30–45 cm long, 2.5–3.5 cm thick,
like radish. The outer color of their roots is brown and it is white from
inside.
History
Ashwagandha or Withania somnifera is a plant. It is the plant of the
Vidania clan; 10 species are found in the world of Vidania and 2 in India.
Ashwagandha is traditionally used for Ayurvedic treatment in India. Along
with this, it is also grown as a cash crop. Ashwagandha got its name due to the
smell of horse urine in its fresh leaves and roots. The plants of Vidania clan
are found naturally in Spain, Morocco, Jordan, Egypt, Africa, Pakistan, India
and Sri Lanka. In India, it is cultivated in all areas up to 1500 meters in
height. Ashwagandha is being cultivated in the states of Rajasthan,
Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal
Pradesh etc. in the northwestern part of India. Ashwagandha is being cultivated
on a large scale in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. In the Shekhawati region of
Rajasthan, it is called ‘Asgarni’ or Padalsingh.
